Cuando fallece, su hijo Michel corrige la obra con el objeto de hacerla m\u00e1s atractiva. La versi\u00f3n original de Verne publicada por Stank\u00e9, Montreal, en 1998, es la que hoy presentamos a los lectores. A pesar de que la obra es aparentemente est\u00e1tica, con peque\u00f1os escenarios y descripciones que se limitan al entorno, es considerada uno de sus mejores trabajos. La historia se desarrolla en la Isla de los Estados, en la Patagonia. En ella, los \u00fanicos habitantes son los miembros de una banda de piratas dirigidos por el terrible Kongre, que mediante artima\u00f1as, logra atraer barcos a la isla, para robarlos y, posteriormente, asesinar a los tripulantes.
