Cuentan las cr\u00f3nicas que el viejo Lear quiso conocer el grado de afecto de sus tres hijas para designar sucesora a quien m\u00e1s le quisiera. Dos se deshicieron en halagos y la menor le contest\u00f3 que le quer\u00eda como padre y nada m\u00e1s. Le pareci\u00f3 poco al rey, que la castig\u00f3. El tiempo vendr\u00eda a demostrar m\u00e1s tarde que era la \u00fanica digna del trono que, por fin, tras una guerra con las hermanas, consigui\u00f3. Shakespeare ampl\u00eda la trama e infunde a la historia una visi\u00f3n muy personal. Lo que en definitiva presenta es una experiencia extrema de dolor, locura y destrucci\u00f3n expresada crudamente y sin reservas. Logra as\u00ed con EL REY LEAR la tragedia tal vez m\u00e1s intensa y ambiciosa de su teatro universal.
