Escrita por Pierre Boulle, aventurero y autor entre otras obras de El planeta de los simios, fue traducida a m\u00e1s de veinte idiomas. Hollywood la consagr\u00f3 definitivamente con la versi\u00f3n cinematogr\u00e1fica de 1957, ganadora de siete Oscars.Basada en un hecho real y autobiogr\u00e1fico de la II Guerra Mundial, Boulle narra las tribulaciones de una tropa de soldados ingleses que, habiendo sido apresada por el ej\u00e9rcito japon\u00e9s, debe construir un puente sobre el r\u00edo Kwai, en mitad de la selva, destinado a unir por ferrocarril el golfo de Bengala con Bangkok y Singapur, lo que facilitar\u00e1 la presencia de los soldados japoneses en los lugares claves de la guerra. El coronel Nicholson, al mando de los prisioneros, utiliza lo mejor de s\u00ed mismo para construir el puente, mientras un comando ingl\u00e9s, entrenado especialmente para destruirlo, aguarda en la selva el momento oportuno.Como explica Javier Coma en su pr\u00f3logo a esta nueva traducci\u00f3n de la obra, Nicholson, \u00abimbuido de militarismo tradicional y de racismo, pretende demostrar su superioridad personal, nacional y racial por medio de la construcci\u00f3n de un puente que, en realidad, ha de favorecer la expansi\u00f3n del enemigo y la multiplicaci\u00f3n de muertes en las fuerzas aliadas\u00bb.
