El \u00e9xito fue tan arrollador que, dos a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, apareci\u00f3 una nueva edici\u00f3n, aumentada con un tercer libro y con notables adiciones y correcciones en los dos primeros. Se completaba as\u00ed la redacci\u00f3n de uno de los libros que mayor prestigio e influencia han tenido en el pensamiento occidental. Sin embargo, el gentilhombre perigordino sigui\u00f3 trabajando en el texto de sus ensayos hasta su muerte, acaecida en 1592. Tres a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde, Marie de Gournay, \u00abfille d\u2019alliance\u00bb de Montaigne, presentaba una edici\u00f3n de Los ensayos siguiendo las instrucciones que le diera su autor, edici\u00f3n que durante siglos ha sido considerada can\u00f3nica, hasta que Strowski prepar\u00f3 la suya entre 1906 y 1933. Hoy, el de Marie de Gournay es visto de nuevo, con justicia, como el texto de referencia, y sirve de base a todas las ediciones recientes fiables. \u00c9ste es tambi\u00e9n el que el lector hispano encontrar\u00e1 en la presente edici\u00f3n, enriquecida con referencias a los m\u00faltiples estadios que experiment\u00f3 el texto y con un completo aparato de notas.
